A Ton of Rare 'Golden Girls' Images

The show is 40 years old and we need to enjoy every morsel of it.

More than 40 years after The Golden Girls debuted, we’re all still obsessed with it. It’s the only entertainment I can think of that would please any member of my family — and we like very different things.

Because I’ve come into possession of hundreds of images from one of TV’s best-ever shows, I’m sharing a bunch of them at random here. It’s a case of: Picture it … many, many times …

A rare Season 1 bio for Estelle Getty. “I know this lady I’m playing,” she said in advance of the series premiere. “She’s partly me and partly my imagination.”

Check out these Season 1 images of Estelle Getty in her Sophia garb. This was before her first face-lift and before Ma routinely wore the more familiar white wig.

Estelle was just 61 at the time these photos were taken. She was already playing a li’l old lady as early as the 1979 film Going in Style, when shew wasn’t even 60.

I love the many group photos, but especially the ones in which one or more of the ladies’ facial expressions is “off.”

The final episode was top-notch. For a show coming to an end, it was as fresh as a Season 1 go-round.

This episode was so good they named it! And they named it “One Flew Out of the Cuckoo’s Nest,” to be exact.

I particularly love scene stills. They’re instant memory-joggers to the particular episodes. You can almost hear the dialogue:

Philip Sterling as a therapist — he played two different shrinks on the series.

Henry Darrow as a Cuban cigar impresario on “Yes We Have No Havanas”

Nancy Walker was Emmy-nominated as Sophia’s sis Angela.

The great Geraldine Fitzgerald gave two out of her three final performances on Golden Girls episodes, including here, as Sophia’s pal Martha, a lady who wants to die. (She was also in the episode where Rose meets an old woman on her way to St. Olaf and the lady, Fitzgerald declares the place is “full of idiots.”)

Joe Seneca as Alvin on this 1987 episode was probably one of the first times I saw a program about dementia. Heartbreaking.
