Lauren Chapin, whose claim to fame was a plucky Kathy “Kitten” Anderson on Father Knows Best, died Tuesday at 80.
Her son Michael confirmed her death on Facebook, writing:
“After a long hard fought battle over the past 5 years, the time has come. My mother Lauren Chapin passed away from her battle with cancer tonight . I'm at a complete loss for words right now. Please keep my sister and family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this incredibly tough time.”
Chapin played Kitten, the youngest daughter on the iconic series, from 1954-1960, appearing on nearly every episode.
She won an impressive five Junior Emmys for her work.
Born May 23, 1945, in L.A., she followed her big brothers, Michael Chapin (seen in the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life) and Billy Chapin (seen in 1955’s The Night of the Hunter) into acting.
Her very first job was an uncredited bit part in the Judy Garland version of A Star Is Born (1954).
She worked on Lux Video Theatre (1952-1955), Fireside Theatre (1955) and in the film Tension at Table Rock (1956), but most of her career in the ‘50s was consumed by playing Kitten in the Robert Young-Jane Wyatt family sitcom. Father Knows Best was a juggernaut, and its title has remained a part of our lexicon ever since.
Interestingly, until her death, all three kids from Father Knows Best had survived an incredible 71 years (plus) since the show’s premiere — Elinor Donahue and Billy Gray are both 88.
Like many other kid stars, Chapin was typecast and found little work once the series ended at the dawn of the ‘60s.
She had a single acting gig in the ‘60s, on General Electric Theater (1960). After that, she appeared in the forgotten film The Amorous Adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza (1976), a super raunchy musical that was the opposite of her TV image — and also the opposite of her eventual Evangelical lifestyle.
Twice in 1977 she reprised her performance as Kitten when TV movies reunited the cast for The Father Knows Best Reunion and Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas.
In 1980, Chapin joined many other ‘50s actors (among them Dennis the Menace star Jay North) as the mom of a character played by kid star Meeno Peluce in the Gary Coleman TV movie Scout’s Honor.
In 1989, Chapin published her memoir Father Does Know Best, which candidly detailed her abusive home life growing up and explored her religious conversion.
After that, she didn’t work on-screen again until an eight-episode run of School Bus Diaries, a Web series.
Chapin’s post-acting work included a 9-to-5 job at a brokerage firm and as a natural childbirth coach. She was very active in religious pursuits, and was a huge advocate for Israel.
Chapin is survived by her two children, and also by her brother Michael (who is 89).⚡️
