Production Underway on 'Spaceballs 2'
Sci-fi comedy follow-up will hit theaters in 2027, bringing with it 99-year-old Mel Brooks and an un-retired Rick Moranis

Amazon MGM Studios confirmed Thursday that production has begun on Spaceballs 2, a sequel to the 1987 Mel Brooks sci-fi comedy.

The news, accompanied by a photo referencing the 2014 announcement that Star Wars: The Force Awakens was in the works, follows a preliminary announcement by Brooks posted three months ago:
Nobody could have predicted a sequel for Spaceballs after it was released. It received meh reviews at the time, and while it made more than it cost, once factoring in promotion, it was not a moneymaker.
But due to home video and then streaming, the film that was considered one of writer-director Brooks’ lesser creations has become a genuine ‘80s classic. And it is a very ‘80s comedy, in the same way Blazing Saddles is a very ‘70s comedy.
Now, the ‘80s are the retro part, and the sequel will fly into theaters in 2027 — 40 years later.
Sadly, quite a few performers from the first installment have died, including John Candy, Dick Van Patten, Lorene Yarnell, Dom DeLuise and Joan Rivers, whose inimitable voice has been silenced.
But along with newcomers Josh Gad, Keke Palmer and Anthony Corrigan, Spaceballs 2 boasts the return to acting of Rick Moranis and also offers his fellow original cast members Mel Brooks (who is 99!), Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, George Wyner and Lewis Pulllman.
In space, nobody can hear you scream with laughter — but I’m hoping the movie accomplishes that anyway. ⚡️
